MANAGING EDITOR – JOB DESCRIPTION Contract
Term: 10 months (with possibility to extend)
Compensation: $15,000
Application Deadline: January 13
Grounded Possibilities is seeking a Managing Editor for an artist-driven publication exploring environmental justice and culture in North Carolina and the wider South. Our work centers imagination, land, ancestry, and community. We approach publishing as an art practice: intentional, rigorous, and beautifully executed. We do not code-switch. Our audience is our people.
We are building a team of collaborators. This role is ideal for someone excited to shape a publication from the ground up, who finds joy in building systems and workflows, and who honors both creative intuition and editorial discipline.
Role Responsibilities:
Manage contributor communication and deadlines
Support writers, artists, and designers through drafts, revisions, permissions, and delivery
Work closely with the design team on layout and production needs
Build and maintain a production calendar
Support quality control from draft to print
Contribute to distribution, launch, and public release planning
Hold the “how” — ensuring the publication arrives complete, polished, and on time
Traditional newsroom experience is not required. We value a strong mix of storytelling, clarity, integrity, artistry, process and organization.
Ideal Candidate:
Strong project manager who cares about process and people
Experienced supporting creative contributors and meeting timelines
Background with print and digital publications (literary, arts, culture, academic, or independent media)
Detail-oriented and flexible with evolving creative work
Comfortable collaborating inside a Black-led, Southern-based creative ecosystem
Interested in building something new rather than inheriting a system
Fundraising or sponsorship experience is a plus but not required.
Contract Details:
10-month contract
Mix of virtual and in-person meetings
Based in the US South (NC-based preferred)
Flexible schedule with heavier production periods
Potential for contract renewal as the publication grows
To Apply, Submit:
Short cover letter explaining interest and relevant skills
Resume/CV
2–4 examples of past editorial or project management work
Three references

We strongly encourage Black, Indigenous, Southern, queer, trans, rural, and disabled applicants, and people with non-traditional pathways into publishing.
